A little history
Kamieńczyk is currently a village, but the history of this place is unique.
Formerly, more precisely in 1428, the village was granted city rights and became
a royal city of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. It was then that the city
developed and performed increasingly important functions. In the past, Kamieńczyk
had a castle, a town hall, cloth halls, three churches, and a monastery.
Due to the city’s location, specifically its proximity to rivers, eight mills, a
river port, and a customs chamber were built here. The city had over 300 brick
houses, which was a sign of solid infrastructure.
The decline of the city began as early as the 17th century. It was mainly
caused by a crisis resulting from an uncertain economic situation, as well as
destruction from the Swedish wars. In the 19th century, residents engaged in
agriculture, and during the summer season, timber rafting. The city was
degraded to the status of a village in 1869 as a result of repression after the
January Uprising.
During World War II, Kamieńczyk suffered greatly, being almost completely
burned, but its urban layout with a rectangular market square survived, as did
the neo-Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was
erected according to the design of Józef Pius Dziekoński in the years 1896-1900.
What to visit, what to see:
- The Historical and Ethnographic Museum in Kamieńczyk, which is primarily
dedicated to the history of timber rafting, so important for these areas.
The owner tells beautiful stories there. - The Monument to the Rafter, by Elżbieta Pietras, located in the market
square in Kamieńczyk, as it was formerly a timber rafting center. - The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kamieńczyk, an
example of Neo-Gothic architecture. A wooden bell tower from 1885. - The Honey and Bread Festival in Kamieńczyk, held during the summer holidays.
