Below you will find three routes that will help you discover the extraordinary richness of birds living along the Bug and Liwiec rivers.

1. Nadkole – Bug and Liwiec Route: Ideal for Beginners and Families with Children (Easy level, approx. 10 km)

The Nadkole – Bug and Liwiec route is about 10 km long one way. The starting point is in the village of Nadkole. The drive takes less than an hour, and public transport makes it possible to reach nearby villages.

The route leads along the picturesque banks of the Bug and Liwiec rivers. While walking, you may come across many species of water and wetland birds. The walk is calm, with no steep climbs, which makes it perfect for families or people who are just beginning their birdwatching adventure.

Along the route, you will most often see:

  • kingfishers sitting on riverside branches,
  • grey and great white herons hunting in shallow waters,
  • terns patrolling the river in search of fish,
  • ducks such as mallards, tufted ducks, and goldeneyes.

A walk along the river can be enriched with a kayaking trip. A kayak allows you to reach places that are difficult to access on foot and gives you the chance to observe birds from a new perspective. Several rental companies operate in the area and offer short, several-hour kayaking trips.

Remember to wear comfortable shoes and take binoculars. Also bring a supply of water and small snacks. If you are planning to kayak, book your equipment in advance and check the weather forecast.

2. Kamieńczyk – Bug and Liwiec Route: A Medium-Distance Route for Active Nature Lovers (Medium level, 20–25 km)

The route is 20–25 km long one way and requires a little more effort, but in return it offers exceptional views and a great diversity of bird species. The starting point is Kamieńczyk — a charming village on the Bug River, located where the Liwiec flows into the larger river. Instead of hiking, it is worth choosing a bike.

This area is especially valued by ornithologists. Vast meadows and wetlands create ideal conditions for many bird species to nest and feed. The route is well prepared, and in several places there are viewpoints from which you can observe birds.

During the trip, you may see:

  • lapwings nesting in wet meadows,
  • snipes hiding among tall grasses,
  • plovers patrolling sandy riverbanks,
  • great white herons forming small colonies.

If you want to spend the whole day outdoors, renting accommodation in Kamieńczyk is a good idea. This way, you can calmly plan observations at dawn and dusk, when birds are most active. It is also a great way to enjoy a weekend break outside the city. Take a bird guide and a trail map with you. It is also worth having a waterproof case for your phone or camera, especially if you plan to go kayaking.

3. Nadkole – Udrzyn Route: A Long-Distance Trip for Experienced Birdwatchers (Difficult level, 40 km)

The Nadkole – Udrzyn route is the longest and most demanding route, at about 40 km. It runs along the natural valleys of the Bug and Liwiec rivers. This is a true adventure for experienced people who value contact with wild nature and are in good physical condition. We suggest completing the route by bike.

  • white-tailed eagles patrolling the sky in search of fish,
  • ospreys nesting in treetops,
  • black storks avoiding contact with people,
  • little stints and rare species of ducks.

It is worth considering a kayaking trip along the entire route. Thanks to a kayak, you can observe birds up close without disturbing them. Remember: take high-magnification binoculars, a notebook for recording observations, and a supply of water and food. Basic survival equipment may also be useful, especially if you plan to spend the night outdoors.
