When looking for interesting places within an hour’s drive or train ride from Warsaw, you will certainly come across the Liwiec River Valley — a region valued for its tourist appeal for many years. Despite its growing popularity, it has retained its uniquely wild character, as confirmed by the fact that two protected areas within the Natura 2000 programme have been designated here: Ostoja Nadliwiecka and the “Liwiec Valley” Special Protection Area for birds.

When planning a short weekend trip or a holiday in this area, it is worth learning more about this beautiful region and checking local offers of houses available for short- and long-term rental.

1. What Towns and Villages Are Located on the Liwiec River?

The Liwiec River, a left tributary of the Bug, is 142 km long. Its mouth into the Bug is located 4 km from Wyszków, in Kamieńczyk. Apart from Kamieńczyk, towns and villages located on the Liwiec or in its immediate vicinity include Mokobody, Wyszków, Liw, Węgrów, Starawieś, Paplin, Łochów, Barchów, Urle, Nadliwie, and the above-mentioned Kamieńczyk. Among the most popular holiday destinations on the Liwiec for Warsaw residents are Kamieńczyk and Urle, famous for its pine forests and therapeutic microclimate. The main tributaries of the Liwiec are Stara Rzeka, Helenka, Muchawka, Kostrzyń, Czerwonka, Miedzanka, and Osownica.

The picturesque Liwiec River, also known as Liw, is a typical lowland river, meandering through a wide valley among fields, meadows, and forests, mainly pine forests, with willows and alder trees along its banks. The riverbed is mostly sandy and the water is relatively shallow, but the river is also characterized by numerous sandbanks and various obstacles, such as fallen trees. In addition, the Liwiec is marked by significant seasonal fluctuations in water levels. The river is a popular kayaking route, valued by numerous kayakers who admire its gentle course and diverse landscapes: beautiful sandy beaches, wet meadows, and extensive pine forests that are home to roe deer, wild boar, hares, and badgers. The Liwiec Valley is an important area for the protection of many plant and animal species, including rare and protected ones such as the European beaver and the otter, while the river itself has largely retained its natural character.

2. Is the Liwiec Deep?

For most of its course, mainly in its lower section, the Liwiec is a shallow river with a sandy bottom. However, in some sections the river reaches a depth of 1.5 or even 2 metres, especially in bends and scoured areas of the riverbed, caused for example by fallen trees. The river’s depth also increases seasonally — the water level in the Liwiec is higher in spring and autumn, as well as after exceptionally heavy rainfall. Spring thaws and intense rains create floodplains, causing the water level to rise along the entire length of the river. Despite these fluctuations and greater depth in some sections, the Liwiec is generally perceived as a shallow and safe river, while its beautiful sandy beaches and crystal-clear water encourage visitors to enjoy it.

3. Can You Swim in the Liwiec?

Safe and recommended bathing areas have been designated along the Liwiec. These include:

  • Zalew nad Liwcem in Węgrów — a guarded bathing area with a sandy beach, operating during the holiday season, where water quality is regularly monitored;
  • beaches on the Liwiec — unguarded, including those in Barchów, Starowola, and Świniotop. The water here is clear and shallow, which makes the beaches popular with families with children. The drive to the beach in Świniotop takes about 50 minutes from Warsaw. The place is not very popular among tourists, which is a major advantage, and what sets it apart from other beaches is the picturesque character of this section of the river, shaped by a sandy escarpment several metres high. The beach in Barchów, located about an hour from Warsaw, is long and wide, and the water there is shallow and clear, encouraging walks up and down the river current.

When choosing a place to swim, safety should always come first. It is best to look for relatively shallow bathing areas and avoid places with a strong current. It is also worth remembering that the depth of the Liwiec varies, and in its upper course the river is much deeper. In addition, attention should be paid to water quality and whether it is suitable for bathing, which can be checked through the bathing water service run by the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate.

4. Is the Liwiec River Clean?

The cleanliness of the Liwiec River varies, also over time as water quality measurements are carried out. In general, the river is clean. In the past, the waters of the Liwiec were classified as class III, which meant the need for constant water quality monitoring and actions aimed at improving it. Current studies confirm the good condition of the water in the Liwiec. However, it is worth bearing in mind that temporary water quality problems may occur, for example due to cyanobacterial blooms. Therefore, before a planned holiday, it is worth checking the latest results of local water quality tests.

Even if it happened — which is unlikely — that the quality of the water in the Liwiec did not allow swimming, the number of local tourist attractions would certainly prevent boredom. The Liwiec Valley is a beautiful and picturesque region, rich in many interesting places connected not only with nature, but also with history and culture.

5. Beaches on the Liwiec River

There are several places on and near the Liwiec River that attract tourists eager to swim. Some of them have a more formal character as seasonal guarded bathing areas, while others remain wild and less frequently visited — but also unguarded — beaches. Here are the best-known ones:

  • Zalew nad Liwcem near Węgrów — a guarded bathing area with a sandy beach, operating during the holiday season, from late June to late August. You will find, among other things, water equipment rental, a beach volleyball court, a barbecue area, and a playground for children.
  • The beach in Starowola — one of the prettiest and largest beaches on the Liwiec, located on the inner side of a wide bend in the river.
  • The beach in Borzymy — a clean, sandy beach that is not very popular, which means it is less crowded. Kayak rental is available here.
  • The beach in Iły — located in the lower course of the Liwiec, before its mouth into the Bug in Kamieńczyk. It is more popular than the beach in Borzymy, so on warmer days you can expect more beachgoers here.
  • The beach near Łochów — a clean and picturesquely located beach at the top of a fairly deep riverbed.
  • The beach in Barchów — a large beach on the Liwiec. The river is shallow here, and the beach is long and wide.
  • The beach in Świniotop — a small beach in a quiet area, located a short distance from Wyszków and Kamieńczyk. The river is clean and shallow here.

6. Kayaks for Rent on the Liwiec

The Liwiec, flowing through the South Podlasie Lowland and the Central Mazovian Lowland, is a picturesque river, and kayaking trips on the Liwiec are an ideal way to connect with nature and spend time actively. Among the most popular kayaking routes on the Liwiec, the following are worth mentioning:

  • the Oszczerze – Liw route — the trip takes about 4–5 hours, and the route is 17 km long,
  • the Wyszków – Liw route — the trip takes about 6 hours, and the route is 16 km long,
  • the Pierzchały – Liw route — the trip takes about 3–4 hours, and the route is 13 km long,
  • the Grodzisk – Liw route — about 10 km long, with a duration of up to 3 hours,
  • the Sowia Góra route — about 7 km, taking 2–3 hours,
  • the Mokobody bridge – Wólka Proszewska route — 5 km long, taking 1–1.5 hours,
  • the Urle railway bridge – Kamieńczyk route — 15 km long, with a duration of 3–5 hours.

You should have no trouble finding a local kayak rental company or a company organizing kayaking trips, as there are quite a few operating here. As a result, the offer is varied both in terms of routes and prices. Before arriving, it is worth looking for information about recommended organizers of kayaking trips or kayak rental companies if you plan to organize the trip yourself. Booking kayaks and the trip in advance will definitely be a good idea, especially during the holiday season. Most rental companies provide kayaks, paddles, and life jackets, and often also waterproof bags for luggage. As part of the trip organization service, companies offer transport of participants and kayaks to the starting point and from the finishing point of the route.

During a kayaking trip on the Liwiec, you can admire beautiful landscapes, river meanders, forests, meadows, and wild birds. There are also interesting places to visit near the river, such as Liw Castle or the wooden church in Jarnice.

7. House for Rent on the Liwiec River

The local accommodation offer is rich and varied in terms of standard and prices. It is worth first considering what your expectations are for the place where you plan to spend your holiday, part of it, or just a weekend. The length of your planned stay on the Liwiec will be one of the most important factors influencing your decision about the type of accommodation you choose.

If you are planning a longer stay in the Liwiec Valley, it is worth looking for a house for rent that best meets your expectations. Interesting higher-standard rental houses can be found in Kamieńczyk and Nadkole. The house in Kamieńczyk stands out, among other things, thanks to its interior designed with attention to every detail. Guests can use all the amenities offered in the house, including a sauna, swimming pool, hot tub, elliptical trainer, as well as games and books. There is a playground for the youngest guests in the large garden. In addition, guests can use sun loungers, a barbecue, and a garden table with chairs. The house is air-conditioned, equipped with anti-burglary shutters and an alarm system, and there is a parking space on the property.

In turn, four cottages for rent in Nadkole are located just 200 metres from the Liwiec. Made of natural wooden logs, which create a healthy indoor microclimate, the cottages are recommended primarily for family trips or shorter weekend getaways. Guests can use, among other things, a sauna and a temperature-controlled swimming pool, available regardless of the season.

8. Holidays on the Liwiec

Sunbathing by the river is undoubtedly one of the main attractions awaiting you during a holiday in the Liwiec Valley, but it is not the only one. In addition to the tourist qualities of the river, which is ideal not only for swimming but also for kayaking and fishing, the entire region offers numerous attractions related both to nature and to its culture and history.

Among the natural attractions, it is worth mentioning above all:

  • Nadbużański Landscape Park — one of the largest landscape parks in Poland. Part of the Liwiec Valley lies within its area. The park is characterized by rich fauna and flora, numerous oxbow lakes of the Bug River, and extensive forest complexes. It is recommended for both hiking and cycling trips.
  • The “Jegiel” Nature Reserve — located 7 km east of Kamieńczyk. The reserve’s name comes from the Kurpie word “jagieł,” meaning spruce. The purpose of creating the reserve was to protect spruce forest on peat — a wet boreal forest community. The average age of trees in the reserve is 120 years; some trees are older, and three of them, around 200 years old, are natural monuments.
  • Sowia Góra — a viewpoint located 7 km from Liw Castle, described in more detail below. From Sowia Góra, there is a beautiful view of the borderland of Mazovia and Podlasie and the Liwiec Valley. You can also observe wild birds and animals from here. Interesting educational boards provide the most important information about the local fauna and flora.
  • Zalew Węgrowski — a reservoir formed from an oxbow lake of the Liwiec. You will find a guarded bathing area with a swimming zone and pier, as well as three fish ponds. For children, there is a paddling pool, and on the shore there is a playground and an activity zone with an animator. All additional attractions are available during the holiday season.

Among the cultural attractions on the Liwiec, it is worth mentioning, among others:

  • Liw Castle — its origins date back to the first half of the 15th century. Today, the castle complex consists of a tower and walls remaining from a defensive Gothic castle, which was destroyed during the so-called Swedish Deluge and the Northern War; the Baroque manor of the Liw starosty, built in 1782; and Gothic cellars.
  • The Armoury Museum is also located here, and in summer, knight tournaments and other equally interesting outdoor events are organized.
  • Łochów Palace and Farm Complex — a neo-Renaissance palace from the 19th century, now a hotel and conference centre;
  • The Larch Manor in Sucha — a restored wooden manor from the 18th century, which can be admired in the Museum of Wooden Architecture in Nowa Sucha near Grębków, not in the Liwiec Valley itself, but nearby;
  • The Palace in Starawieś — the Radziwiłł family palace with a characteristic clock tower;
  • The Manor in Paplin — a late Baroque manor from the 18th century with a wavy gable, typical of Baroque noble manors.

The “Strongholds – Castles – Manors – Palaces” trail in the Liwiec Valley is worth seeing, as it leads through villages with seats of the former nobility, including the above-mentioned sites in Sucha, Paplin, and Starawieś.

  • the Museum of Wooden Architecture in Sucha;
  • the Trail of the Dukes of Mazovia — connected with the history of Mazovia, running among other places through Liw and Węgrów;
  • the Great Lithuanian Route — a historic trade route passing through Węgrów.

9. A Weekend on the Liwiec

The Liwiec Valley is recommended not only for longer holiday trips, but also for short weekend getaways. The short distance from Warsaw is one of the factors contributing to the region’s great popularity among people looking for an interesting place to relax without spending many hours travelling. You can reach the Liwiec from Warsaw by car in about an hour, which is a major advantage of this place.

If you decide to spend a weekend on the Liwiec, it is a good idea to plan in advance the activities you want to focus on during your stay in the area. There are many options for more or less active leisure here — sunbathing and swimming, kayaking trips, fishing, and discovering the local culture and history of the region. It is worth visiting, among other places, the 15th-century castle in Liw, one of the main attractions of the region. Today, the castle houses the Armoury Museum with a rich collection of weapons. Interesting events, such as knight tournaments, are also regularly organized here.

There are numerous historic manors and palaces near the Liwiec, such as the above-mentioned neo-Gothic palace in Starawieś and the Baroque manor in Paplin. Some of them are open to visitors or serve as hotels.

An interesting way to spend time on the Liwiec may be to follow the Liwiec Valley Trail — a tourist route connecting many interesting places and monuments, which can be explored on foot, by bike, or partly by kayak.

If the aim of your stay is simply relaxation and recreation, you can fill your time with walks and cycling trips. The surroundings of the Liwiec are characterized by beautiful landscapes that encourage exploration. It is worth checking in advance whether there is a bike rental service near your accommodation if you plan to explore the area by bicycle. A relaxing walk in the forest, a picnic by the river, and simply enjoying the silence, peace, and beauty of the surrounding nature will also be an excellent idea.
